Storming North Shore

The weather was crazy yesterday thunderstorms and lighting on the NS but that did not stop the surf.
The waves came up yesterday as predicted not so big but just big enough for some fun.
It was crowded with a slew of crew. Stew , haouli reeves made his skills known at pipe again with some great old school style.
Skipp, myself, Nelz, Benco, Shasha Speckler all were waiting for the their turn out at pipe.
Looks good today as well for the last session of 2008 so i must get on it.

Forecast looking good finally

It looks like the horrible swell pattern that has present for the last three weeks is changing. A series of west swells look to bearing down on the islands starting today and persisting for a few weeks. Looking forward to the surf. I tore my rail off at half point yesterday when I hit a sharp rock at high speed so I will be having to use my brand new board which I have been saving some time soon.

Game day

Yesterday was another chill holiday. No waves up north yet so I went to Sandys after watching my favorite football team the Dolphins win a crucial game vs the Jets to make the Playoffs and win their division. To make things better it looks like some fun west swells are coming this next week which will also be very nice.

Holiday Cheer

We had a great last few days of holiday cheer.
Christmas eve Heather and I went to church and then dinner at Ruth Chris steak house where I highly recommend the cowboy ribeye. We had a nice day at home opening gifts and speaking with friends and then had a festive Christmas dinner at our house with a few friends. The surf has been kinda small and windy so I have hit up a few movie dates with the wife. A 12 hour island wide black out happened last night and luckily I was at home with Heather so it was actually a pleasant experience where as some people were in traffic jams and in elevators for hours yuck.

Santa came early to Hawaii and was treated to a nice 3-4 foot day at Pipe and Back door. I surfed for 5 hours and had a great time surfing some real waves for a change.

Holiday fun

I have been busy preparing for Christmas.
Luckily there has been a shortage of waves. so it has allowed me to make post office runs, find time to wrap gifts, and go Christmas shopping, as well as even prepare some recipes for Christmas dinner.
It will be a great Christmas, and hopefully Santa will bring us all some waves like the one in this photo by Danny Black, very soon.

Since another day surfing sandy beach in December is so boring, I thought I would share a few photos of the the Christmas tree my wife and I put up in our house. No it is not your traditional tree but very fitting and beautiful none the less. The best part is that it puts you right back in the Christmas spirit even when you have to go out and battle the masses for gifts and parking. Happy Holidays :)

Ground hog day

Today was pretty similar to yesterday. I surfed half point in the morning, saw Stewart out again, he is heading to Kauai for a Fire premier tomorrow.
Then I hit up Bikram Yoga in the afternoon with Skip and Nelz. Nelz said north shore was almost head high at some locations.

Small surf forcast for the holidays

Today I hit up sandy beach half point for the 3rd day in a row. Small but rideable little waves with no crowd made it interesting.
Waves have been to small to be worth a drive up north shore and the long term forecast shows this pattern is here for the next few weeks. I am not to phased by it though. As the winter waves will come again. I am just going to keep busy with the holiday cheer, Bikram Yoga and quick surf sessions so I will be ready when the waves finally make an arrive again.

I got a hair cut the other day and shaved the goatee off. It feels very nice not having all that hair in my face when I surf and having stuff get caught in my goatee. :) Though I do miss the coverage I got from the hair when out in the sun, but I guess that is why I have a sunscreen sponsor.

With all the stormy weather we have had in the islands recently it does not surprise me when you see images like this result.
Strong Waves and wind should mean that you keep your sail boat in the harbor, not dry dock it on the reef. It will be awhile before this mess gets fixed, bummer for all the surfers at Ala Moana bowls where this boat is wrecked now.

Last day in the canarys and we hit up El fronton this morning. New swell arrived and some heavy 6-8 ft slabs were on offer for the crew. Tide was dropping quick and the wind was up a bit though it did not some of the boys driving through some big pits. Hardy Stewart gt dub winny and PLC. We surfed till it got to low and am now at the airport on my way home via madrid London and los angeles. Be back Monday night in Honolulu.

final day at confital

The final day of the final event of the IBA world tour finish today in 1-3 foot surf. The morning saw small weak 1-2 foot inconsistant waves great the competitors. Early upsets saw Myself, Local favorite Richard Diaz,and Guillerme Tamega all lose out due to poor wave quality. The quarterfinals started to see a small increase in swell and by the semis and finals the set waves were almost 3 foot. Uri Valadaio took the world title by making the finals as Ben Player failed to advance from his semi. In the final the locals stole the show, taking both 1st and 2nd place. I do not know their names but Uri got 3rd and Hugo Pinerho got 4th. It was a super crowded at the beach bar and I had fun cheering friends on all day with the rest of the peanut gallery. I ended up in the top 5 for the end of the year IBA world tour rankings, not bad I guess, when you figure only 2 of the 9 events saw set waves over 3 foot ha ha and I got 2nd in both those events. It was a tour filled with small waves. I guess that is something I need to work on, but is that really what bodyboarding is all about ......

Friday

Today at the confital contest the Drop knee final went out in the morning in inconsistant 1 foot waves. The finalest tried their best to put on a show and it was local favorite Ariel jimminez who took the win from David Hubbard in the dieing minutes of the final.
Ariel caught the largest wave of the final a 2 ft set and got the highest score of the heat a 7 point ride.
David had two 6.5 point rides but came up just .05 short of taking the win. David Hubbard still won the IBA DK world tour. The battle for third place was also interesting and competitive as Dave Myself and Winchester were in a seesaw battle for third until 1 minute left when Dave did a clean floater to score his highest ride taking me out by .25 and placing third.
After the event I went to surf a good wave with the puerto ricans and had some fun ramps to warm up for the final day of competiton tomorrow. The contest will be on all day with the mens round 7 through to the final finishing in the afternoon.

Thursday DK day

The swell was pretty small today so the drop knee heats were thrown out amoungst it.
Fun clean contestable waves saw the big names find their way to the final after three long rounds. Favorite David Hubbard was in form as well as Local Ariel Jimminez. Dave Whinchester scored the wave of the day a 9.75 for a deep tube to slash tail whip and me who luckly won all my heats. It was funny times on the knee for sure, ha ha. The final should be held either friday or saturday depending on conditions.

Confital updates

Another day in confital with more action. Fun surf had competitors showing the crowd some sick moves in the bowly waves.
Some upsets occurred as mitch and hardy went down early. I surf tomorrow and it looks like small condiions but I am hoping for the best.
We will see what happens early as check in is at 7 am. Will post some updates tomorrow again.

The contest went on again today and the waves were super fun and some sick riding went down . The women went out as well and they were also impressive to watch. Andre Botha was the upset of the day as he suffered a hectic wipe out yesterday while charging fronton and was pretty bruised up and sore and did not get many waves today. A local knee border tried to get some waves in the contest area today droped in on some girls and was quickly chased out by a big local bodyboarder and beaten down for his insolence.
I went for a surf down the beach and after the event finished before it got to dark to see it was fun and i hope to surf tomorrw before the swell drops off later in the week.

Today we woke up early to get some waves before we checked in for the event. We were greeted with a stiff onshore breeze at the best spots. So we returned to las palmas to change dollars to euros so I could pay my entry fees. We went to the contest site and check in and paid our fees then surfed the contest area for a bit to get more practice at low tide which is more difficult than at high tide. I got to see all the competitors and catch up with some old friends once the first rounds went out.
I am seeded in round 7 as their are about 115 riders in this event. you can see the heat draw and watch the event live at www.confitalibatour.com
It looks like I will surf around wendsday afternoon, so lets all hope the waves stay around.
I watched some tv episodes of The Simpsons in spanish today and it is still funny as hell even though I could not understand more than a few words. I hope to catch a few more pisodes before I leave.

I slept in this morning and hit up confital for a 4 hour session in the afternoon. Not much of a crowd because of the onshores but the wave is very good, hollow with some good air bowls.
It should be a fun contest this week for sure. Many of the pros were out practicing at confital. Andre Botha is in town and he went and surfed very heavy fronton at high tide as it was maxing out and onshore. Andre the crazy guy he is took some huge slabbing waves for the delight of the crowd on the cliff.

The waves dropped off a lot from yesterday it was only 1-2 ft today. I watched the canary bodyboard national tour contest and saw some good rding from the locals. I went for a quick grovel with david hubbard and ariel jiminez in between heats and then went and watched fronton with 30 guys fighting it out over 1-2 foot peaks. enjoying some spainish soccer on TV at the moment and will hit up the waves again tomorrow as it is supposed to come up solid again.

The surf was good fun at fronton today all the pros were out me GT, BP,RH, MR, AB,AL, UV and PLC.
It was not perfect but some heavy waves coming through. 4-8 foot from the north with mostly lefts. GT had one 10 footer where he dove from the top with a heavy wipeout from the current IBA world tour #1. All in all a fun time was had by all. Tommorrow should be decent again and I will report back with all the details. Asta manyana

While the rest of my country men celebrated Thanksgiving , I was on the road and thankful to make it to my destination safely with all my gear.
I woke up after a 10 hour sleep recharged and ready to go, I am staying with my friend Richard Diaz and we are going to hit up Fronton this afternoon. Fronton is a sick bodyboard wave, one of the best in the world, so I am excited to be in the canarys with a good swell outlook.

Canary's bound

I am enroute to the Canary islands. It is the last event on the IBA world tour and is at the break Confital from December 1-6th. It is a great wave and has sick potential, the charts are looking good and I hope we score some long right barrels for the contest.

I will be updating my blog every day as well so you can check here for the latest report from the Canary Islands.
I left on Tuesday night from honolulu and am currently in dallas next stop london than madrid than and then I finally arrive in the Canary's Thursday evening so it is a long mission to get there from Hawaii, but with heavy reef slabs and solid swells it is well worth it.

I drove up north again today and hit up back door and off the wall insanities area.
It was fun but not a lot of swell and with the triple crown in town there sure were a lot of photographers on the beach.

I went out to the the east side today and checked out Makaupu'u and paddled out at Sandy Beach . The wind swell was up and some waves were crushing at the shore break. There were some usual body whoppers as well as a a few roll ins from the outside. I got a great work out paddling against the current at half point as well.

Dk Session

I hit up the north shore mid morning to find that the surf had dropped off and had a Sunday crowd on to it but still some fun little waves though. So I took out my DK board to try and get some turns in on the soft shoulders and avoid the crowds. It was a good call and I was able to have a blast just catching whatever came my way.

Stormy Saturday

With most of Hawaii under a flash flood advisory, and the winds clocking from all directions under a cloudy dark sky the surf went from bad to good on the north shore. With hideous conditions in the morning hours gave way to stellar perfect strong south east east winds which is direct offshore in the afternoon and with a 3-4 foot north west swell hitting the reefs it turned out to be a nice day in Hawaii after all.

I drove up to the north shore this afternoon to get some waves.
I was greeted by some very clean conditions and a small north swell.
It turned out to be was a nice little afternoon as after I surfed I came back to town and enjoyed a feast based around Spencer Skippers infamous guacamole made from his fathers big island avocado trees.

I just heard from Morey team manager/rider that the Morey OBX pro was a cool success.
With icy cold windy surf on tap for the die hard bodyboarders to battle it out. Last years winner Chris Monroe placed second to new winner Dan Worley. Morey and Kitty Hawk sports hooked up the contest with tons of sick prizes and looks like the OBX shop to get all the new BZ and Morey, Churchill bodyboard gear.

I watched Spencer Skipper take a few rides in this whirly bird today while I surfed out at half point this morning.
As part of his lifeguard training he got to jump out of the bird in to the middle of the ocean and swing around in a basket underneath it as well. Very fun stuff.

Kamehameha Surf night

The annual Surf night at Kamehameha schools
was a great success. Tons of support from all the bodyboarders.
A sick preview of boogie nation 9.
Skip and I also won the pictionary playoff which had surfers pitted against bodyboarders, and we came up victorious in the final seconds.
All in all it was a super fun night giving back to the youth.

Dropping Swell

The swell dropped a lot overnight.
The waves were in the 3-5 foot range this morning and it was packed and not so great.
Decided to surf some out of the way breaks instead of the usual spots.
I was able to get a lot more waves in a more relaxed atmosphere and have more fun which what bodyboarding is all about :)

Pipeline is back

Pipeline is back today, Hawaii's most notorious wave shook off the cobwebs and offered some big barrels for 100 or so lucky humans. It was 10 foot on the biggest sets and some of the bodyboarders were out getting some shacks as well as the triple crown guys and locals. David Hubbard was back from overseas and shredding as was Tim Hamilton, bud Miyamoto, Eddie Solomon Paul Benco , Mike Murphy and a few others.
No other swells are coming soon. So I surfed for 6 hours straight until the onshores came up.
Back tomorrow to see what happens to the swell.

USBA final day results

The salt creek pro finished today in 3-5foot storm surf.
Cold and windy all the competitors fought hard in the tough conditions.
I won the men's pro and the Usba national title for the 3rd time in a row.
Brian Stoerh placed 4th and won the dk national tour title and travis smith placed 3rd in the amatuer today to win the open amatuer title.
Joe Grodzen won the dk and placed third in the mens pro at his home break.
David philips placed 3rd in dk pro and JeremyWright placed 2nd in his first Usba final.

Day 2 and it is the exact opposite of yesterday with howling side onshore winds up to 25 knots.
The surf is windy and stormy and the action is still a go though as the competitors battle up an down the beach for the title.

The salt creek pro went well with amazing glassy 1-3 foot waves all day. One of the nicest days I have ever scene in california.
Tomorrow the quarter finals of the pro resume at 8 am sharp.
Ross skip Nelz myself mike lepeirre drew erickson brian stoerh chris won and jeremy wright all made there heats, and will surf tomorrow and battle for the win.
Amatuers like alex brown travis smith and dillion drews all made their heats and will battle on tomorrow.

Hanging out in California

I arrived in California last night. Jeff Marshall the ocean current team manager picked me up in the team van and brought me down to Dana Point.
Stayed at Eddies house and finalized the next Bodyboarder Mag with him and Steve.
Hit up salt creek this morning with the BZ team Chris Monroe, David Phillips, Brian Stoerh, and Travis Smith.
It was fun small and super clean California surf. On my way to the BZ factory to do some work, before the contest tomorrow.

It has been a pretty small week of surf here in Hawaii. I leave tomorrow for the USBA nationals at Salt Creek in California. It would seem that the north shore will pump as a result of my departure from the islands as the forecast looks very nice for the next 5 days while I am gone. Hope fully a good pattern is setting in so I will be able to enjoy some swell upon my return :)

Heard from my brother today he said
"Aruba is kick-ass! Pure wind swell, so the more onshore, the more you score. Sick island though, everyone is quad-lingual, no rascism, healthy 2nd-world economy (meaning everyone has what they need, and not too much of what they don't), basic standards of living help that out. Bodyboarding is healthy too, and I've been really well-recieved. Even met the prime minister yesterday!"

After a quick surf yesterday I went golfing with a few friends.
It was my friend Eric's birthday so he was celebrating on the course with some silver bullets.
I was driving so did not partake in the festivities. And it paid off as my partner Jason and I won the best ball tournament. Paring almost every hole.

This year my wife and I plus a few friends decided to get politically incorrect and go hit up the down down block party and Waikiki. We were a big hit we had a lot of people take pictures of us as a group. Most people got the joke and were loving it.

Blast from the past

I went down to half point this afternoon, saw Jacob Romero killing it getting ready for the USBA championships at salt creek next weekend. So I went out to join him, when halfway through the session I saw Pat Caldwell (the co inventor of the el rollo) paddle out. We spoke for awhile and he is back in Hawaii for an family gig and decided to check out his old stomping ground, sandy beach. Pat is still riding well with clean smooth style. Went to Kaisers this afternoon for quick grovel session after doing some homework and working on the next issue of Bodyboarder mag earlier in the day. On the way home I stopped at Safeway to grab some food and saw they had one copy left of the current issue on the stands. It was nice to see they are selling so fast here in Hawaii.

VOG

Today the whole island of Oahu was saturated in a Volcanic haze like fog aka VOG. The surf was clean in the morning before the onshore sea breeze's came up. I surfed Pipe which was ok for a short while until the north swell totally took over. Last night I took my dogs for a walk around the block, well actually they took me as they made me run most of the way, I think they really liked getting out of the house.

Surfsling and Stuff

Got a little box of goodies from Brian and the crew at over at Surfsling. Washing the slings now so I can put them in to use. Went to North shore this morning. It was small but clean with some fun OTW sand bars.
On the way home I got caught in some crazy Wahiawa traffic. There is lots of road construction on the main road now so avoid it like the plague if at all possible.
I also stopped at Costco on the way home to fill up my thirsty car for $2.69 a gallon and enjoy a hot dog soda combo. Very Nice :)

Recession fun times

Since the world has been engulfed in a global recession.
Finding things to do at night with out spending lots of money can be tricky.
Playing board games like cranium with your friends is free and super fun as the games makes you do some funny things. Also watching a movie at home and bbq with the boys works too. I highly recommend tropic thunder for some great laughs. http://www.tropicthunder.com/
The best thing is that Actor/Director Ben Stiller is a bodyboarder. He rides a skip board and reads bodyboarder magazine.
Good support... and he even filmed tropic thunder on Kauai. My dad Showed him some of the best sites to film and up and coming BZ team rider David Philips was an extra and got to hang out with all the stars.

Rainy Day

Rainy day up on the north shore today. In fact the whole island is getting soaked.
Surfed some fun backdoor and pipe then went home to watch college football with the wife. A nice day after all :).

Went by the sports authority in Honolulu today and saw that they carry a large selection of BZ boards including the Hubb 41 polypro-stringer and Hubb 41.5 dow-stringer models. Impressive selection for a sporting goods store in Hawaii.

My dog Knoxville had some stiches in his paw and now he has to wear this cone in order to prevent him from ripping in to them. Kinda of sad looking.

The line up at cost co gas station. It was well worth the 20 minute wait to score the $2.89 a gallon gas.
Also after a sandy beach session I was lucky enough to snap this quick shot of an old school bodyboarder with a cray old board with a huge skeg directly in the center of the bottom skin. Super retro and impressive to see the old guy still going for it at full point.

Surprise at Sandys

I woke up this morning and planned to go for a quick half point surf before I sat down to study all day for a my Economics 6000 mid term tomorrow. I arrived at the beach to see all sorts of action taking place in the parking lot, not uncommon at sandy beach but for 830 am it was not usual.
As I got my gear ready I noticed every one was focused on a young girl with a red bathing suit getting video taped and photographed in the showers. She seemed like a porn star/ stripper or something out of the ordinary so I took a photo from a distance for the blog, though with my I Phone I knew could not really do my viewers any justice. Luckily the young lady called out and offered to give an up close shot for the Jeff Hubb blog fans. The local crew that was watching was pretty impressed that I got the up close shots as some of the poses she struck you just can't post on the internet, well at least not for free. I guess it just goes to show you that you never really know what will happen when you wake up each day.

Outer Island Adventure

I Just returned from a quick weekend jaunt to an outer island with Spencer to try and score some of the south swell away from the hectic crowds of Oahu. The waves were not as good as we expected, but we still made the most of the trip by exploring this new islands scenic coastlines for hidden discovery's.

Sandy beach

When a small south swell is running on Oahu, I like to find myself at sandy beach, one of the birth places of bodyboarding. My favorite spot at sandys pictured here is half point. Sandy's is a crip little play ground for bodyboarders no matter what the conditions, God bless it.

Job Hazard

Today I went to see Dr. Hadley an ENT (Ear Nose Throat ) doctor. As my ear kept getting clogged in the water as I could not drain it. This caused me to have low hearing from my left ear and I felt like I was 80 years old. My ears were fine but the doctor did extract this peice of wax and other debris from my ear and now I can finally hear again. I guess this kind of stuff is what happens when your job is to surf every day :).

Twins

I returned home from the beach today and was very happy to see I had a present waiting for me at my door step. Two new Hubb Fundamental bodyboards. Both boards are exactly alike, they are like identical twins, it is the first time I have had two exact boards at the same time. The boards look sick, with very tight color combos (Black deck, Royal Blue inner rail, Black outer rail and graphic bottom) these boards look like they will fly.

Tahitian Vacation

At the start of October I was itching for a surf trip. As I had been surfing small waves and doing contests for the last 7 weeks and so I was in desperate need of some perfect waves and deep tubes. As luck would have it my sponsors Churchill fins and Ocean Current clothing were in serious need of some advertisement and product shots of me for their up coming season. The choice was easy, I booked a trip down to the French Polynesia to the island of Tahiti to chase a few south swells for the week. I am lucky enough to have a few great friends who live there (Michele and Poe) that I stay with when I go down there, so it is a pleasure to hangout with them and enjoy the true Polynesian lifestyle. Nick, Simon and Alex Omerod were also down in Tahiti with Liam O'Brian shooting photos for Bodyboarder magazine and video for 662 so I linked up with them every day to get my work done.
The waves were super fun the entire week as we had two decent swells about 4-6 ft with amazing conditions. I surfed Teahupoo and Tapuna twice a day and it was truely south pacific perfection. All in all It was a great opportunity to surf great waves get work done for my sponsors and visit with my friends. Not a bad life if I must say.

North shore day 2

With the swell still hanging in there at 3-5 ft and my turn to drive Skip and I ventured up north again.The skies overcast and rain was heavy, but with clean conditions we still found some fun barrels and ramps at pipe and backdoor today. The best part was that on the ride home I filed up my gas tank at costco for only $3.17 a gallon and that may have been the real score today.

Pipeline comes alive 10/13/08

This is my first Blog entry ever and I am kinda excited to get this thing rolling. Yesterday Pipeline was super fun 3-6 occasional bigger sets and super empty mostly all just local bodyboarders and perfect conditions light south east winds all day which means straight offshore :) I surfed for 8 hours on my first north shore day.I drove up with Skip in his at 630 am and made a day of it stayed till 6 pm. We hung out at the beach all day long. Skip got some sick pits and I had some huge ramps to mark a nice start to the early 2008 winter surf season on the north shore.
